This program, inspired by the Clark Art Institute’s exhibition Sensing Place, explores the American soundscape and identity through the lens of composers and performers. Three artists: Antonin Dvorák, Elliott Carter, and Charles Ives, each tuned their own senses to the environments around them, and infused their music with the spirit of place. Our program finds commonality in their expressions, and encourages us to discover the experience of our own surroundings afresh. Sensing Place features Dvorak’s American String Quartet, Carter’s deeply romantic 1948 Quintet, and the Alcotts from Charles Ives’ profound, Concord Sonata, sensitively arranged by SoundMind flutist, Isabel Lepanto Gleicher.
